Roma culture

The digital repository of the presented Roma culture is divided into several sections: literature; sociological research; history and anthropology; Roma language; periodicals; arts, traditions, contemporary life.

The literature section presents fiction and poetry by Roma authors (essays, short stories, novels, plays, fairytales, poems) in separate editions, collections and anthologies. Here one can find works of both classical authors of Roma origin and of many young authors like Deyan Kolev, Teodora Krumova, Albena Dedova, etc. A significant part of this section consists of the archive of Ivan Kirilov which comprises manuscripts, typewriting and books with autographs. Some of the important books by Sali Ibrahim are digitalized. Critical research works on the Roma literature are also presented.

The section “Sociological Research” consists of analysis of the health status of the Roma people and their access to health care of good quality, research works on the specifics of the gender relations in the Roma family, the spaces and borders in the life of a Roma woman and the kinship structures in the Roma community. Other important research works are those on the positioning of the Roma population within the social space, on the dynamics of the social identification of the Roma and the peculiarities of the life of these minority groups, on the practices of social and cultural integration of the Roma, on their access to quality education, on the mechanisms of success and failure.

The section “History and Anthropology” includes research works on the customs, traditions, holidays and rituals of the Roma – legends, stories, beliefs, ritual practices. The section presents works on the history of the Roma ethnic groups and their migration, on the character of their religious affiliations, research works on the fate of the Roma of Eastern Europe, historical dictionary. Other materials included here are pieces of memoir and documentary literature by and about Roma people, as well as a rich collection of folklore.

The section dedicated to the research and teaching of Roma language includes grammars and practical courses in Roma and linguistic descriptions of the Roma language and its dialects. Some scientific works on teaching methodology are also presented and they are oriented to work with children of Roma origin. A significant part of that section is occupied by the textbooks, schoolbooks and research books of Acad. Hristo Kyuchukov.

The section “Periodicals” presents digitalized issues of Roma newspapers and magazines like Drom Dromendar, Gipsy Heaven, O Roma and Romano Ilo.

In the section “Arts, Traditions, Contemporary Life” there are collected photographs from different regions of Bulgaria that document the development and the changes in the Roma celebrations, crafts, everyday practices. The book of Lozanka Peycheva and Ventsislav Dimov The Zurna Tradition in South-Western Bulgaria is digitalized and so is a collection of old Roma songs.
